DAY 1: Arrive at Entebbe airport; met and transferred to accommodation in Kampala, 30 minutes away. Orientation and introductory talk on Uganda
DAY 2: Visits to local schools/ colleges in and around Kampala. Students also visit an orphanage or similar institution where they can see the situation of underprivileged Ugandans. DAY 3: Day trip by boat to UWEC (Uganda Wildlife Education Centre) in Entebbe and Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary on Lake Victoria, to learn about the rehabilitation of orphaned chimps. A most valuable educational experience about this endangered ape. A traditional buffet lunch will be served on the boat. Return to residence in Kampala. DAY 4: Travel westwards to Fort Portal through tea estate highland areas. Equally fascinating should be the immensely diverse ecosystem. Packed lunch en route at a picnic site in the forest. Late afternoon visit to a local project/ school. Participants will learn about coping with the challenges of development in Uganda. DAY 5: Early departure to the famous Kibale forest: main activity- the forest walk whose highlights include the diverse habitats of the park. These include tropical rainforest, riverine forest, swamp and grassland, as well as a wide variety of birds and monkeys and perhaps duikers and bushpigs. Besides being an exciting holiday destination, Kibale National Park is an important site for conservation and research. The Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Jane Goodall Institute Habituation Project focuses on habituating the chimpanzees to human presence. DAT 6: Early departure to Kibale for students who did not do the primate walk yesterday. Students who did the primate walk now visit/ participate in the community service projects. Visit to tea estate. DAY 7: Travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park via Kasese. The Park's diverse Ecosystem of grassy plains, tropical forest, rivers, swamps, lakes and volcanic craters is home to an incredible abundance of wildlife. These may include lion, leopard, giant forest hog, cape buffalo, elephants, defassa waterbuck, Uganda Kob, Topi and bush buck. The game drive is against the backdrop of the massive Ruwenzoris (the Mountains of the Moon, as they are proverbially known). DAY 8-9: Early departure after breakfast for morning game drive and return to base for lunch. Afternoon boat trip on the Kazinga Channel Launch from where game and colourful bird viewing can be excellent. Kazinga Channel is reputed to have one of the greatest concentration of hippos in Africa. DAY 10-11: Breakfast and then game drive out of the park en route for the drive back to Kampala. This route takes one through one of the marvels of nature: the great Western Rift Valley whose descent reveals a picturesque view of Lakes George and Edward on a clear day. Stop at the Equator for photographs and curio purchases. Visit coffee and tea farms on the way. Dinner and overnight in Kampala. DAY 12: Visit to some of the Buganda cultural sites around Kampala and/or Jinja to see the source of the River Nile and the Owen Falls dam that provides power for Uganda and parts of neighbouring Kenya. The Nile starts its 4000-mile journey to the Mediterranean from Lake Victoria. Chance to see the sugar, coffee and tea plantations as well as colourful roadside fruit/vegetable markets. Last chance for curio shopping. Overnight in Kampala. DAY 13: A day in a secondary/primary school; community service DAY 14: Transfers to airport for onward flights. |
